Rise Up Hamilton Podcast Episode 1: What Mary & Blake Discuss

“Ok, So We’re Doing This” begins with the story of how Hamilton entered Mary and Blake’s lives. Mary was already a musician, music educator, musical-theater fan, and director, but the enormous early hype surrounding the production initially made her resistant to it. She wanted to experience the music for the first time inside the theater rather than listening to the cast recording in advance.

That changed after friends who had seen the production urged her to give the album a chance. One friend explained that the writing was so dense that listening beforehand would make the eventual theater experience richer rather than spoil it. Mary finally downloaded the recording for a long drive, became captivated by “You’ll Be Back,” and found herself crying as she reached the second half of the musical.

When she returned home, Mary decided that she and Blake would listen to two songs together every night. Blake was initially skeptical, both because of the musical’s reputation and because he did not want an inaccurate version of history to interfere with his love of the subject. That resistance did not last long.

Why Mary & Blake Started A Hamilton Podcast

Mary & Blake had already spent years podcasting about television, books, characters, and storytelling. Hamilton offered them a chance to apply that same approach to a different medium. Instead of examining an episode of television that could be replayed scene by scene, they would be working from a stage production, a cast recording, historical context, and the emotional experience created by the combination of all three.

The central idea behind Rise Up is that the musical deserves to be examined as more than music. The songs are scenes. They create conflict, expose weaknesses, change relationships, and force characters toward choices they cannot undo. The podcast therefore focuses on themes, character arcs, antagonism, structure, history, and the reasons the story continues to reveal something new with each listen.

That framework becomes the foundation for the rest of the limited series. Later episodes explore the history behind the musical, the construction of Hamilton and Burr as opposing characters, Hamilton’s flaws as a protagonist, and the supporting-character web that keeps pressure on him throughout the story.

Can You Listen If You Have Not Seen Hamilton?

You do not need to have seen Hamilton onstage to listen to Rise Up. Mary & Blake created the podcast for anyone who has spent time with the cast recording and wants to understand the story more deeply. Future conversations occasionally reference staging and visual choices, but the music and lyrics provide enough of the dramatic foundation for listeners to participate.

That accessibility was important from the beginning because many listeners first encountered Hamilton through the album. Long before everyone could watch the filmed Broadway production at home, the recording was how fans learned the language of the show, found their favorite characters, and discovered that their everyday thoughts had slowly been replaced by Hamilton lyrics.

Why “That Would Be Enough” Changed Everything For Blake

The musical became personal for Blake while he and Mary were listening together outside their home. At the time, Blake was struggling with the feeling that he had not yet accomplished enough or given Mary the kind of life he believed she deserved. Then they reached “That Would Be Enough.”

Eliza’s insistence that she values her life with Hamilton more than the status or financial success he believes he must achieve reflected what Mary had already been trying to tell Blake. The song transformed the musical from something clever and historically interesting into something emotionally immediate. Blake began crying, the two continued listening, and Hamilton became part of the language they used to understand their own lives.

That experience captures the larger reason behind the podcast. Mary & Blake are interested in craft, history, and theatrical construction, but they are also interested in what happens when a story reaches through those mechanics and names something true. Rise Up exists in the space where analysis and emotional experience meet.
