The Last Kingdom Season 5: Uhtred Finally Gets What He Has Been Chasing
The Last Kingdom Season 5 is the final television season of Uhtred’s story, bringing Brida’s war, Æthelflæd’s final days, Sigtryggr’s fate, Æthelstan’s rise and Uhtred’s lifelong fight for Bebbanburg onto the same battlefield.
But the season is really about inheritance. Everyone is trying to decide what gets passed down: a crown, a kingdom, a faith, a wound, a family name or a home. Uhtred has spent his life believing Bebbanburg is his inheritance. Season 5 finally asks whether getting it back can mean anything after everything it cost him to return there.
What Happens In The Last Kingdom Season 5?
Season 5 begins years after the Winchester crisis. Uhtred is living at Rumcofa and raising a young Æthelstan while Sigtryggr and Stiorra rule at Eoferwic. That uneasy peace collapses when Brida returns determined to punish Uhtred and the Saxon world she believes betrayed her.
From there, the season becomes a chain reaction. Æthelflæd’s death creates a struggle over Mercia, Æthelhelm manufactures a war between Edward and Sigtryggr, Brida and Uhtred finally reach the end of their relationship, and Uhtred is pulled north toward the goal that has defined him since childhood: Bebbanburg.
Season 5 Is About What We Inherit
There is a really useful idea connecting almost every major storyline in Season 5: children are inheriting the unfinished business of their parents. Æthelstan and Ælfweard are inheriting Edward’s succession problem. Ælfwynn inherits the political consequences of Æthelflæd’s rule. Stiorra inherits Uhtred’s impossible relationship with Saxons and Danes, while Brida tries to pass her faith and rage onto Vibeke.
Uhtred is caught in the middle because he is no longer simply the angry son demanding his birthright. He has become the father, mentor and elder warrior trying to prevent the next generation from repeating all of his mistakes. That shift is what makes Season 5 feel like an ending even before Uhtred reaches Bebbanburg.

Why Æthelflæd’s Death Changes The Entire Season
Æthelflæd’s death is the point where Season 5 stops feeling like another chapter and starts feeling like the end of an era. She is one of the last major links to Alfred’s generation, and her death removes another person who could understand Uhtred as something more complicated than a weapon or political problem.
Her death also exposes the difference between Alfred’s children. Æthelflæd has accepted that ruling means surrendering pieces of her private life, while Edward increasingly believes that stability can be created by consolidating power. His response to Mercia pushes the political world closer to England, but it also makes the method of getting there much uglier.
Brida And Uhtred Were Always Going To End Here
Brida is not just another Season 5 villain. She is the person who remembers Uhtred before Alfred, Wessex, Æthelflæd, Bebbanburg and almost everything else that came to define his adult life. They started in the same place and then spent decades becoming different answers to the same identity problem.
Uhtred learns to live between Saxon and Dane, while Brida eventually experiences compromise itself as betrayal. That is why their final confrontation carries more weight than simply defeating an enemy. Uhtred is saying goodbye to one of the last people who knew the version of him that existed before his life became intertwined with England.
Sigtryggr’s Death Shows The Cost Of Edward’s England
Sigtryggr is one of the season’s most painful casualties because he represents a version of coexistence the story repeatedly claims to want. He is Danish, but he is not interested in endless war. His marriage to Stiorra and his rule at Eoferwic offer the possibility that Saxon and Dane do not need to erase one another for the political map to become more stable.
Æthelhelm destroys that possibility by creating a conflict built on misinformation, and Edward ultimately demands a submission Sigtryggr cannot give. The result is one of Season 5’s clearest warnings about the project Alfred started: creating England may be historically inevitable from our perspective, but the show refuses to pretend everyone swallowed by that process experienced it as progress.
Does Uhtred Finally Get Bebbanburg Back?
Yes. Uhtred finally retakes Bebbanburg in the Season 5 finale after defeating Wihtgar and helping turn the battle against King Constantin’s forces. It completes the external goal established when Uhtred was still a child: the fortress stolen from his family is finally his again.
What makes the victory work is how much the meaning of Bebbanburg has changed. Young Uhtred wanted the fortress because he believed getting it back would restore the identity that had been stolen from him. Older Uhtred arrives with children, friendships, losses and loyalties that could never fit inside that original definition. He does not reclaim Bebbanburg by becoming the boy he once was. He brings the man he became home.
The Last Kingdom Season 5 Ending Explained
The clever part of the Season 5 ending is that Uhtred gets Bebbanburg without giving Edward everything he wants. Edward sees the victory as another step toward extending his authority across the north, but Uhtred refuses to simply hand Northumbria over to him.
That choice matters because Uhtred has finally learned the lesson Alfred spent years trying to teach him in reverse: having power does not automatically make a person worthy of exercising it. Uhtred wants England to exist, but he is no longer willing to assume that any king who wants England therefore deserves it.
So the television series gives Uhtred his personal ending while deliberately leaving the political ending unfinished. He has Bebbanburg. England still needs its king. That unresolved piece becomes the bridge into Seven Kings Must Die.
What To Remember After Season 5
- Uhtred has finally reclaimed Bebbanburg, but he has not pledged Northumbria to Edward.
- Edward still has not completed Alfred’s dream of England.
- Æthelstan has grown into a warrior and serious future claimant, with Uhtred serving as one of his most important father figures.
- Ælfweard remains another possible successor, keeping Edward’s succession complicated.
- Stiorra survives but has lost Sigtryggr and much of the life she tried to build at Eoferwic.
- Brida, Æthelflæd, Sigtryggr and Osferth are gone, leaving Uhtred increasingly surrounded by the next generation.
- The political story is not finished. Bebbanburg resolves Uhtred’s oldest goal, but England remains unfinished.
What Comes After The Last Kingdom Season 5?
Season 5 completes Uhtred’s television story, but it is not the end of his journey. Seven Kings Must Die picks up after King Edward’s death, when Æthelstan’s claim to the throne and his attempt to complete Alfred’s dream of a united England pull Uhtred back into a political fight he thought he had finally escaped.
The interesting problem is that Season 5 has already given Uhtred the ending he spent his entire life chasing. He has Bebbanburg. The movie therefore has to find one final reason for him to leave home, fight for England and decide what all those years of service to Alfred’s dream actually meant.
