The premiere confirms that they remain in the past, but it does not establish the mechanism that prevents them from traveling with Henry. Julia returns to Castle Leathers with William and tells Davina the truth about her origins. There is a tempting explanation that William cannot travel and therefore keeps Julia in 1715. That remains a theory through Episode 2.01.
