The Last Kingdom Season 3: Alfred Is Dying, And Everyone Is Fighting Over What Comes Next
The Last Kingdom Season 3 begins with Alfred running out of time and ends with Edward inheriting a kingdom that still feels unfinished. In between, Uhtred loses Gisela, breaks with Alfred, returns to Ragnar, watches another family collapse, battles Skade’s curse and eventually finds himself back in Winchester beside the dying king he has spent years fighting.
That makes Season 3 a story about legacy. Alfred wants his idea of England to survive him. Ragnar’s friends want his soul to reach Valhalla. Aethelwold wants to rewrite the succession. Uhtred wants the freedom to decide what parts of his own past still define him. Everybody knows something is ending, and the real battle becomes who gets to decide what survives.
What Happens In The Last Kingdom Season 3?
Alfred’s health is failing as a new Danish threat emerges under Bloodhair and the seer Skade. After Gisela dies, Uhtred’s grief and refusal to submit to Alfred’s religious authority finally break their already fragile relationship. Uhtred accidentally kills Brother Godwin, refuses to swear himself to Edward and escapes Wessex after holding Alfred at knifepoint.
Uhtred rejoins Ragnar and Brida but cannot fully commit himself to the Danish attack on Wessex, especially when Æthelflæd needs his help. Ragnar is then murdered by Aethelwold, forcing Uhtred and Brida into a desperate attempt to save Ragnar’s soul. Uhtred eventually returns to Winchester, reconciles with Alfred before the king’s death and helps Edward defend the kingdom Alfred leaves behind.
Season 3 Is About Who Gets To Write The Ending
Death is everywhere in Season 3, but the more interesting question is what happens immediately afterward. Gisela dies and the Christian world tries to decide how she should be buried. Ragnar dies without his sword and Uhtred and Brida refuse to accept what that means for his soul. Alfred knows he is dying and spends the season trying to control the political world that will exist after him.
Even the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle becomes part of that argument. Alfred is preparing the official story of his reign, and Uhtred realizes that the written history will remember Alfred while leaving out the pagan warrior who repeatedly helped make Alfred’s victories possible. Season 3 understands that legacy is not only about what you accomplish. It is about who survives long enough to tell everyone what happened.

Episode 3.01
Alfred’s declining health hangs over Wessex as Bloodhair and the seer Skade emerge as a new Danish threat. Uhtred defeats Bloodhair’s forces and captures Skade, but returns home to devastating news: Gisela has died in childbirth.
Episode 3.02
Uhtred’s grief over Gisela collides with Alfred’s Christianity after he gives his wife a pagan funeral. When Brother Godwin insults Gisela and Uhtred accidentally kills him, Alfred demands another oath to Edward. Uhtred refuses, takes Alfred hostage and escapes Wessex.
Episode 3.03
Banished from Wessex, Uhtred returns to Ragnar and Brida as Aethelwold tries to assemble a Danish alliance against Alfred. Meanwhile, Æthelflæd realizes that the threat against her may be coming from inside her own marriage and turns toward the people she still trusts.
Episode 3.04
Uhtred abandons the Danish cause to protect Æthelflæd from Haesten, proving once again that his personal loyalties refuse to fit neatly inside anyone’s political categories. Back at the Danish camp, Aethelwold murders Ragnar in his sleep and denies him the warrior’s death he believed would carry him to Valhalla.
Episode 3.05
Ragnar’s death threatens to fracture the Danish alliance while Uhtred turns his attention back toward Skade and Haesten. Edward begins making decisions of his own and risks Alfred’s anger by offering Uhtred the military support he needs.
Episode 3.06
After the fighting at Beamfleot, Uhtred reunites with Brida to find a way to free Ragnar’s soul and confront the curse Skade has placed upon him. Their shared grief briefly brings the two old friends back together even as their lives continue moving in opposite directions.
Episode 3.07
Uhtred uses Sihtric’s apparent betrayal as part of a plan to recover Skade, while jealousy between Haesten and Bloodhair turns violent. Skade kills Bloodhair herself, and Aethelwold’s scheming finally earns him a brutal punishment from the Danes he has been manipulating.
Episode 3.08
Uhtred finally ends Skade’s curse by killing her without spilling her blood, then turns back toward Winchester and the unfinished business waiting there. To save Ragnar’s soul, he still needs the blood of Ragnar’s closest living relative: Thyra.
Episode 3.09
Uhtred secretly meets the dying Alfred and the two finally strip away years of oaths, resentment and political maneuvering long enough to speak honestly about what they meant to each other. Alfred pardons Uhtred before his death, while hatred spreading through Winchester produces another devastating loss for Beocca and Uhtred’s family.
Episode 3.10
With Alfred gone, Edward must decide whether he will merely inherit his father’s crown or actually become king. Uhtred helps defend Wessex as the Danish alliance fractures, then kills Aethelwold with a blade carrying Thyra’s blood, finally giving Ragnar the path to Valhalla that Uhtred and Brida fought to restore.
Gisela’s Death Finally Breaks Uhtred And Alfred
Uhtred and Alfred have survived years of disagreement because both men can usually convince themselves that the larger political need matters more than whatever they happen to be fighting about. Gisela’s death makes that impossible. Uhtred is grieving his wife, and Alfred’s Christian world immediately turns that private grief into another argument over who has the authority to define Uhtred’s life.
When Uhtred gives Gisela the funeral he believes she deserves, Alfred sees desecration. When Brother Godwin insults her, Uhtred reacts as a husband rather than an oathman. The accidental killing that follows is almost less important than what Alfred asks for afterward: Uhtred must bind the rest of his life to Edward. Uhtred finally decides that the price of remaining inside Alfred’s system is too high.
Ragnar’s Death Turns Memory Into A Mission
Ragnar’s murder is deliberately cruel because it attacks more than his body. Aethelwold kills him while he sleeps and without a weapon in his hand, which means Uhtred and Brida believe Ragnar has been denied the warrior’s death necessary to reach Valhalla.
That turns grief into action. Uhtred and Brida cannot bring Ragnar back, but they can fight over what his death means. Their mission to avenge him becomes another version of Season 3’s larger question: when somebody is gone, who gets to decide the story that survives them?
Why Uhtred And Alfred’s Final Conversation Works So Well
Uhtred and Alfred spend much of the series arguing about oaths, religion, land and the future of Wessex, but those arguments often hide the more uncomfortable truth that each man has become essential to the other. Alfred needs Uhtred because Uhtred can do things Alfred’s system cannot. Uhtred resents Alfred because no matter how often he tries to leave, Alfred’s cause keeps becoming entangled with the people Uhtred loves.
Their final conversation works because death removes most of the leverage. Alfred cannot bind Uhtred forever, and Uhtred no longer gains anything by pretending Alfred meant nothing to him. The king acknowledges what Uhtred has done, grants his pardon and asks him to help Edward without trying to own him through another oath. For once, their relationship becomes a choice rather than a transaction.
The Chronicle May Be Season 3’s Smartest Idea
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle gives the season’s legacy argument a physical form. Alfred knows that ruling is not enough. A kingdom needs a story about itself, and the written record becomes part of the project he intends to leave behind.
Uhtred discovers the irony immediately. He has fought Alfred’s battles, saved his family and repeatedly altered the direction of Wessex, but history will remember Alfred while Uhtred disappears from the official version. It is a perfect problem for a fictional protagonist inside a historical drama: we know Uhtred cannot appear in the historical record because he never existed, so the show turns that limitation into a character wound.
Aethelwold Wants To Inherit Something He Never Earned
Aethelwold is Alfred’s dark mirror throughout Season 3. Alfred is obsessed with creating something strong enough to outlive him, while Aethelwold is obsessed with inheriting power simply because he believes birth entitled him to it.
That desperation turns him into one of the season’s most destructive characters. He manipulates Saxons, encourages division, joins the Danish alliance and ultimately murders Ragnar because his survival depends on everyone around him becoming less stable. His death at Uhtred’s hand therefore resolves two different stories at once: Ragnar is avenged, and Alfred’s succession survives one of its most persistent threats.
Edward Has To Become King Before Alfred Is Gone
Edward’s story works because Alfred cannot simply hand him the finished product. Edward has the title waiting for him, but the season repeatedly tests whether he has the judgment necessary to carry Alfred’s project forward. One of his most important decisions is choosing to support Uhtred even when Alfred has not given him permission to do it.
Alfred is initially furious, but he also recognizes exactly what has happened: Edward made a decision. The son stopped waiting for his father to tell him how a future king should behave. That is the only way Alfred’s legacy can actually survive. Edward has to inherit the vision without becoming a copy of the man who created it.
Thyra’s Death Shows The Poison Beneath Alfred’s Dream
One of the cruelest turns in Season 3 is that Alfred’s dream of a united England is being threatened not only by Danish armies but by hatred growing among the people he is supposedly trying to unite. Aethelwold feeds that fear because division benefits him, and Thyra becomes one of its victims.
That keeps the show from turning Alfred’s England into a completely clean heroic destination. Political unity does not automatically produce tolerance, wisdom or decency. Building the kingdom is only the beginning; the people inside it still have to decide what kind of country it is going to become.
The Last Kingdom Season 3 Ending Explained
Season 3 ends with Alfred dead, Edward on the throne and Wessex surviving another Danish attack. Aethelwold is killed by Uhtred using the blood needed to complete the ritual for Ragnar, allowing Uhtred and Brida to believe that Ragnar’s soul can finally reach Valhalla.
The larger resolution belongs to Uhtred. He began the season refusing to allow Alfred to determine the rest of his life through another oath, and he ends it choosing to help Edward without surrendering that freedom. Alfred’s dream survives, but Uhtred no longer has to belong to Alfred for that to happen.
That is the real handoff. Alfred does not need to live forever, and Uhtred does not need to become Alfred’s property. The things worth preserving have to survive because the people left behind choose to carry them.
What To Remember After Season 3
- Alfred is dead, and Edward is now King of Wessex.
- Uhtred is a free man again. Alfred pardoned him before dying rather than forcing another oath upon him.
- Uhtred has agreed to help Edward, but he does so by choice rather than permanent obligation.
- Ragnar is dead, but Uhtred and Brida complete the ritual they believe allows his soul to reach Valhalla.
- Aethelwold is dead after Uhtred kills him in the final battle.
- Thyra is dead, leaving Beocca devastated.
- Skade and Bloodhair are both dead, ending the curse storyline that followed Uhtred through most of the season.
- Æthelflæd remains trapped in an increasingly dangerous marriage while becoming more politically important in Mercia.
- Uhtred still has not reclaimed Bebbanburg. That unfinished goal is waiting for him in Season 4.
