The Last Kingdom Season 4: Uhtred Finally Becomes The Adult In The Room
The Last Kingdom Season 4 begins with Uhtred making another attempt to reclaim Bebbanburg and ends with him taking responsibility for a boy who may someday become King of England. Between those two moments, Beocca dies, Cnut falls, Brida is broken, Mercia loses its ruler, Æthelflæd takes power and Sigtryggr completely changes the shape of the Danish threat.
That makes Season 4 feel like a handoff. Uhtred is still fighting many of the same battles he has fought for years, but he is no longer merely the angry young warrior being dragged into somebody else’s political project. He is becoming the person younger characters look toward when the adults around them fail.
What Happens In The Last Kingdom Season 4?
Uhtred begins Season 4 by returning north to reclaim Bebbanburg from his uncle Ælfric, only for the mission to end in tragedy when Wihtgar returns and Beocca is killed protecting Uhtred’s son. Uhtred is forced south again just as Cnut launches his attack on Mercia and Æthelred’s absence leaves Æthelflæd dangerously exposed.
The season then shifts into the battle for Mercia’s future. Æthelred dies, Uhtred briefly becomes the proposed Lord of Mercia before surrendering power to Æthelflæd, and a new Danish leader named Sigtryggr eventually seizes Winchester. By the finale, Uhtred has helped negotiate another fragile peace and accepts responsibility for raising Edward’s son Æthelstan.
Season 4 Is About Passing The Story To The Next Generation
One of the things we talked about while covering Season 4 was the feeling that The Last Kingdom was beginning to pass the baton to a newer group of characters. Alfred is gone, Edward is king, Æthelflæd has become a political force in her own right, and Uhtred’s children are now old enough to disagree with him rather than simply exist as extensions of his story.
Uhtred feels that transition more painfully than anyone. He begins the season still defining himself through the father and home he lost as a child, but Beocca’s death takes away one of his final living connections to that original life. By the end, Uhtred is being asked to become for Æthelstan what Beocca, Ragnar and eventually Alfred were for him: the older person responsible for helping a boy survive long enough to understand who he is supposed to become.

Uhtred surrenders the Mercian throne to Æthelflæd, while an epidemic forces Uhtred’s family and allies onto the road and exposes how fragile the political order still is.

Sigtryggr emerges as a very different kind of Danish leader, while the choices made by Edward and Æthelflæd leave Winchester increasingly vulnerable to an enemy willing to think rather than simply charge.

Sigtryggr captures Winchester and turns Edward’s own capital into leverage, forcing Uhtred into another conflict where negotiation may matter more than the sword.
Episode 4.10
Uhtred negotiates with Sigtryggr to end the siege of Winchester, Stiorra chooses a future with the Danes, and Edward entrusts Uhtred with Æthelstan as another generation quietly enters the story.
Why Uhtred Fails To Retake Bebbanburg
Season 4 opens by appearing to give Uhtred the thing he has wanted since the beginning. Ælfric is vulnerable, Bebbanburg appears weak and Uhtred finally has enough experience and loyal men around him to believe that destiny may actually be ready to cooperate.
Instead, Wihtgar returns and the mission collapses. That failure matters because The Last Kingdom refuses to let Bebbanburg become a simple reward for Uhtred being sufficiently brave. He is still trying to reclaim the home of his childhood while ignoring how much his life has expanded beyond it, and Season 4 makes him pay for believing the old goal can still be solved in the old way.
Beocca’s Death Changes Who Uhtred Has To Become
Beocca is one of the few people who can look at adult Uhtred and still see the child who lived at Bebbanburg before the Danes took him. He knew Uhtred’s father, survived the collapse of that original world and remained connected to Uhtred through almost every identity the character accumulated afterward.
When Beocca dies protecting Young Uhtred, the symbolism is almost painfully clean. One of the final guardians of Uhtred’s childhood sacrifices himself for Uhtred’s child. The story is telling Uhtred that he cannot keep being the son forever because there is now another generation standing behind him that needs protection.
Cnut’s Death Breaks Brida In A Different Way
The revelation that Cnut manipulated Æthelwold into killing Ragnar destroys the foundation Brida thought she was standing on. Her relationship with Cnut, her grief for Ragnar and the anger she carries toward Uhtred suddenly collapse into the same moment at Tettenhall.
Brida kills Cnut, but the victory gives her no relief. When she asks Uhtred to kill her rather than allow her to become a prisoner, he cannot do it. From Uhtred’s perspective that is mercy; from Brida’s perspective it becomes another betrayal, setting up the version of Brida who eventually returns in Season 5.
Why Uhtred Gives Mercia To Æthelflæd
After Æthelred’s death, Mercia needs a ruler strong enough to satisfy its competing factions without simply becoming Edward’s possession. Uhtred becomes the compromise candidate because he has military authority, political relationships and just enough independence from Wessex to make the arrangement possible.
The clever part is that Uhtred recognizes almost immediately that Æthelflæd is the person who should actually rule. He has spent much of his life angry when other people decide his destiny for him, and here he gains enormous power only to voluntarily give it away because somebody else is better suited to carry it. That is growth Alfred would probably find extremely annoying to have missed.
Uhtred And Æthelflæd Finally Choose Different Duties
Uhtred and Æthelflæd have spent years moving toward one another, but Season 4 finally gives their relationship the thing that makes it dramatically interesting: a cost. To become Lady of the Mercians, Æthelflæd agrees to remain chaste, making her responsibility to Mercia incompatible with the private future she might have imagined with Uhtred.
That choice echoes the same conflict Uhtred spent years having with Alfred. Duty keeps demanding personal sacrifices, and Uhtred has always resented people who allow political ideas to become more important than human relationships. Now he loves someone who genuinely believes her people require exactly that sacrifice.
Why Sigtryggr Works So Well
One of the things we loved about the end of Season 4 was how Sigtryggr subverts the threat the show trains us to expect. He is dangerous, but his intelligence matters more than his appetite for destruction. He captures Winchester because he understands where Edward will not be, and once he has leverage, he is willing to negotiate rather than turn the entire conflict into another glorious Viking death march.
That makes Sigtryggr particularly useful this late in the series. The political world is becoming too complicated for another simple Saxons-versus-Danes story. Sigtryggr understands coexistence, territory and compromise in ways that make him feel like a leader for the next stage of the show rather than another obstacle Uhtred needs to stab.
Stiorra Makes The Choice Uhtred Never Could
Stiorra’s decision to leave with Sigtryggr is another piece of the generational transition running through Season 4. She has inherited Uhtred’s connection to both Saxon and Danish worlds, but unlike her father she is given an opportunity to actively choose which life she wants before kings and oaths make the choice for her.
Uhtred does not necessarily love losing his daughter to that choice, but respecting it is part of becoming a different kind of father. He spent his childhood being claimed by one family and then another. Stiorra gets to tell him where she belongs.
The Last Kingdom Season 4 Ending Explained
The Season 4 finale ends the siege of Winchester through negotiation rather than complete military victory. Sigtryggr receives territory, Stiorra chooses to go with him, Æthelflæd remains Lady of the Mercians and Edward survives another crisis with his kingdom intact but his larger dream of England still unfinished.
Uhtred’s ending is quieter but more important. Edward asks him to take Æthelstan and teach him how to become a warrior. Uhtred has spent years complaining about Alfred, Edward, their politics and the endless ways Wessex manages to make its problems his problems, and yet here he is being entrusted with Alfred’s grandson.
That is why I think the season’s real ending is not Winchester. It is the transformation of Uhtred’s role in the story. The man who once needed fathers is becoming one.
What To Remember After Season 4
- Uhtred still does not have Bebbanburg. Wihtgar controls the fortress after Uhtred’s failed attempt to reclaim it.
- Beocca is dead after sacrificing himself to save Young Uhtred.
- Æthelflæd rules Mercia and has chosen her political responsibility over a future with Uhtred.
- Brida survived but endured captivity after Uhtred refused to kill her, deepening her hatred toward him.
- Sigtryggr is now a major Danish leader and has formed a relationship with Stiorra.
- Stiorra has chosen to live with Sigtryggr rather than remain under Uhtred’s protection.
- Edward is still trying to expand Alfred’s dream, but England remains unfinished.
- Uhtred is now responsible for Æthelstan, putting him directly into the life of the boy who will become crucial to England’s future.

Season 5 picks up years later with Uhtred raising Æthelstan, Æthelflæd still ruling Mercia, Sigtryggr and Stiorra building their life at Eoferwic and Brida preparing to return. It is the final television season and finally brings Uhtred back to the fight for Bebbanburg.
